Any relocation that is under 100 miles is classed as a local journey, as long as it's within the same state. Yet even if you're moving a short distance, across town for example, you still need to take the same precautions for making sure your belongings arrive safely and without any damage.
Choosing a local mover
If you've decided to hire a moving company, ask friends and family for recommendations. This is the best way to find a reputable corporation that you can trust with all your prized possessions. Make sure they are a member of The American Moving and Storage Association, which will guarantee some level of protection and responsibility for moving your items securely.
Take a visit to their facilities and check the state of their office. This will give you an idea of how reliable they are likely to be. You may also need to store some items so that packing can be a gradual process and you're not climbing over boxes of non-essentials for weeks to come.
Local mover rates
When moving across town, billing is according to time not the distance. The company will estimate an hourly rate, which often includes their journey time from their office to your old property and back to their office from your new home. They very rarely give a rate based on volume or weight.
Moving companies are generally busier during the summer and the end of the month. You may be able to pick up a discounted rate at off-peak times. If you do need to move during peak days, make sure the company you choose are still using experienced and qualified staff. Often they hire temporary help to augment their workforce who may not have so much experience.
Transit Insurance
Even if you're just moving across town, insurance is still essential. If you've hired a moving company they may offer insurance - but be sure to check exactly what is covered. If you're moving yourself, it's worth taking out transit insurance or finding out if your home policy covers you.
Keeping account of your belongings
It's very unlikely that local movers will provide an inventory of your belongings. This is because they charge by the hour and offering an inventory would of course increase the cost. You can either pay extra for an inventory to be carried out or make your own list, with dated photographs of valuable items to prove their condition at the point of origin in the case of a dispute or claim.
Packing guide
Even if you're moving just a few miles down the road it's important to pack your belongings carefully and securely. Don't be tempted into thinking that because it's a short journey nothing can get broken! Pack all your fragile items with bubble wrap and packing material in sturdy boxes. Also make sure heavy items are placed at the bottom of the moving vehicle to prevent breakages and that they can't move during transit.
